Family Affair
The British Oak is owned and managed by Pub Paradox Ltd. We’re a small, family-run business with almost twenty years’ experience of running great pubs and won the British Institute of Innkeeping’s prestigious Licensee of the Year in 2015.
Established in 2007 by Diane Marsden, we currently manage not only the British Oak but also the Dark Horse in Moseley. While Diane manages the day-to-day business of managing two bustling venues, her daughter Maria holds the reins at the British Oak, and Maria’s partner Mathew is at the wheel in Moseley. We’re passionate about great drinks, great food, and great vibes. And did we mention we love pubs?
Heritage & Sustainability
Here at the British Oak, we are committed to sustainability and have implemented several measures to help offset our emissions. Our building is Grade II Listed, so we’ve installed insulation in the roof and secondary glazing in our windows whilst managing to preserve the beautiful Tudor style architecture of the building. Alongside this, we’ve swapped to motion sensor lights in toilets and communal areas, eliminating the unnecessary use of electricity, and we’re powered by 100%
renewable energy.
We’re also proud to work with Wonky Coffee, who repurpose surplus coffee from select premium roasters such as Craft House and Volcano to avoid unnecessary waste. And at the end of the night when it’s time to drink up, we distribute compostable paper cups which go in our new compost bin. Plus, as an SME (Small and Medium Sized Enterprise), we’ve been working with Aston University to develop and implement an environmental framework for the business by creating a sustainability roadmap which will cover the next 9 months of trading. We’ll be completely rethinking our approach to sustainability by honestly communicating with
our brilliant suppliers about our sustainability goals, and we’ll be developing engaging digital and physical content to raise awareness of how much work we have to do as an industry – and just how easy it is to go green!
